Basic Concepts

Social psychologists have been interested in the dynamics of small groups for many years; however, they have only recently turned their attention to teams. One indication of this trend is the year in which each of the terms referring to groups and teams was first introduced in the index of Psychological Abstracts. The term "sociometry" first appeared in the index in 1940 with references to the work of Moreno and others; the term "group dynamics" appeared in 1945 with reference to the work of Lewin and his colleagues; and the term "small groups" appeared in 1950 with reference to the work of Bales and others.

The concept of "team" did not appear in the index until 1971, with reference to the "team teaching method" that had become a focus of activity in education. An average of four articles were listed each subsequent year under this heading. However the more general heading of "teams" did not appear in the index until 1988, with reference to twenty-one studies of teams used in clinical practice, sports, business, and military activities. In an article published that same year, Lefton recorded that "the latest 'buzzword' is teamwork" ( 1988:18) and in a book Reddy and Jamison noted that "team building has come of age" ( 1988:ix). Their edited volume contains a representative selection of articles on team building.

Sociologists apparently developed an interest in teams at an earlier period since the index to the Sociological Abstracts contained listings of articles about teams from 1961 onward and about teamwork from 1962. In subsequent years the abstracts contained an average of five articles per year on teams or teamwork.

Although most of the groups and teams described in the social-psychological literature are relatively "small," with twelve members or less, research on "group dynamics" is not limited to small groups and the term "team" is used in military terminology to refer to "combat teams" of
