Team Building with SYMLOG

This case was selected because it presents an organizational approach to consulting and thereby encompasses many of the elements of team building and general consulting discussed in this book. Although not made explicit in the text of the chapter, if you review the elements discussed in Chapter 6 you will note that most, if not all, of the areas discussed are included in the description of the intervention presented here.

This particular case demonstrates the possibilities of intervening at the organizational, intergroup, group, and individual level simultaneously, using survey feedback to increase effectiveness on all of those levels, and using the feedback to build a management development program for ongoing training and retraining employees as they move through the organization. Although the company itself was small by some standards, the issues it was facing in terms of strategic growth, planned change, and future competitiveness are easily translatable to companies of virtually any size, and are appropriate for illustrative purposes.


INTRODUCTION

The SYMLOG Consulting Group was contacted in late spring 1987 by the president and CEO of a resort. He had been exposed to SYMLOG through an executive development program given at the Harvard Business School. There he had used SYMLOG's program for analyzing an individual's view of a team via a field diagram, called YOURVIEW. He was interested in knowing whether or not this technology was also available to teams working together.

In further discussion it turned out that his organization was growing rapidly, and he realized that in order to meet long-term growth projections for the organization, he would need a fully effective management team. He
