7 Moral Education for the United States

We have completed our task of constructing, on the basis of defensible norms, a theory of moral education suitable for Americans. The norms are those of moral agency; the theory contains the general end, content, and pedagogy of moral education. We do not know if we have made the theory clear enough to be comprehensible to all who might be interested in it. But even if we have made it transparent, we have done little, if anything at all, to show what moral education in the United States would be like if the theory were applied here. This we need to show. Americans can fully know whether or not to accept the theory only if they grasp what its application would entail. Moreover, policy makers, teachers, school administrators, community leaders, and others can follow the theory in practice only if they have some insight into what we intend in its application.

We will attempt to clarify the theory's application in different ways. In this chapter we will relate the theory to recent policies, proposed or implemented, that pertain to the end, content, and pedagogy of character education in America. In the next two chapters we will relate the theory to several fictional individuals from different social classes who require moral education. In the last chapter we will discuss the theory's implications for various types of institutions in America.
