Implications

Before closing our inquiry, we have to address two more issues: What are the implications of our proposed moral education for Americans for their nonmoral character education? And what changes in American institutions does our moral education entail? Prior to taking up these questions, however, let us review the course of our investigation.


SUMMARY

To provide a framework for shaping the character of Americans, we have established a theory of moral education that sets forth the end, content, and pedagogy of character education grounded on the normative principles of moral agency.

The norms are based on freedom, knowledge, purposefulness, evaluation, deliberation, and the other features of a moral being, mainly, a voluntary agent acting in relation to another voluntary agent. Consequently, the standards pertain to Americans insofar as the latter are moral agents, thus being the tie that at least implicitly binds Americans in moral fellowship. Moreover, the norms appear to be feasible as moral principles for Americans. We could think of no substantial reason why the members of this nation should reject the standards; in addition, the standards seem to be consistent with traditional American principles.

The aim of moral education, our theory holds, is to produce a person with a character consisting of dispositions structured according to the criteria of moral agency. These dispositions, or moral virtues, are cognitive and affective. The chief intellectual disposition is moral reasoning, which embodies the knowledge, skills, appreciations, and psychical en-
