BRYAN VILA is Associate Professor of Criminology, Law & Society in the School of Social Ecology at the University of California, Irvine, and Director of the School's Focused Research Group on Orange County Street Gangs. His research specialties include criminology theory, crime control policy, the police, and human ecology. Prior to becoming an academic, Dr. Vila spent seventeen years in local, national, and international law enforcement.
CYNTHIA MORRIS is a freelance writer based in Irvine, California. From 1985 to 1995, she was a research and science writer at the University of California, Irvine. She currently is working (with Dr. Vila) on a second book in Greenwood's Documentary History Series, titled The Role of Police in American Society: A Documentary History, and on a novel, Micronesian Blues.
