Managing Evaluations in Higher Education

As in any organization, evaluation can be used to direct and assist decision making in institutions of higher learning. This chapter will demonstrate how an internal evaluation office (Office of Instructional Resources, OIR, at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, UIUC) designs and manages evaluation programs and program evaluations for a variety of campus decision-making purposes. Whether the evaluation information is used for course or curriculum improvement, personnel reviews, or policy analysis, evaluation serves many different purposes by providing relevant and useful information. Following examples of OIR evaluation efforts is a set of "lessons" our staff has learned about conducting internal evaluations in a university setting.


OIR EVALUATION ACTIVITIES

Among other responsibilities, including faculty development, instructional computing, and media utilization, the Office of Instructional Resources is responsible for the development and management of several evaluation programs as well as the conduct of ad hoc evaluations of selected campus programs. Following is a brief description of a few of these evaluation activities.
