Smart Problem Solving: How Metacognition Helps

Almost everything students do in school is a problem. For at least 12 years of their lives, children demonstrate their skills and knowledge by answering numerous questions and performing a wide range of problem-solving activities. Consider the following examples given to us by teachers:

The minimum time required for a letter mailed in Chicago to arrive in Washington, DC, is as follows: straight first class, 22 hours and 45 minutes; airmail, 14 hours and 30 minutes; and special delivery airmail, 12 hours and six minutes. By using special delivery airmail, what percent of time is saved over first class mail?

" George sure seems happy today," said David. "I think I'll strike while the iron is hot and ask him if I can borrow $5." What does it mean to strike while the iron is hot?

Put a few drops of red food coloring into the bottom of a glass beaker filled with water. Slowly heat the water. What happens to the food coloring?

Build a bridge out of toothpicks.

What should be done if some members of our class do not follow the rules?
