Pornography: Research Advances and Policy Considerations

By Dolf Zillmann; Jennings Bryant | Go to book overview

from grace, once branded as promiscuous, women become "public property." As Kanin ( 1969) put it, they are seen as having "forfeited their right to accept or reject sexual partners" (p. 23). They are unprotected, and the violation of their rights is reduced to a misdemeanor or less. The findings reported by Weaver ( 1987) are certainly consistent with these arguments. In addition, they force an extension: Pornography not only deglorifies women in the eyes of men, but in the eyes of women as well. However, as sexual coercion is the province of men, only the pornography-induced deglorification of women in the eyes of men seems to produce asocial consequences of general concern.
