As a metropolitan research university, The University of Memphis has the advantage of partnering with the City of Memphis, Shelby County; and the State of Tennessee as living laboratories for our research efforts. There are times in which our laboratories extend across the Mid-South region and the United States--and even around the world.

The areas of applied research in which our faculty and students are engaged touch many facets of our lives. In this special issue of Business Perspectives, you will read about inquiry in areas as diverse as transportation, earthquakes, health care, international business, education, and ecology.

Many of our research efforts are aimed toward building public/private partnerships. According to national statistics, $300 billion was spent nationally on research and development in FY 2002. Of this total figure, $200 billion was attributed to industry and only $10 billion to colleges and universities. It is natural that public/private partnerships should evolve to address research issues of common concern.

Through the FedEx Technology Institute, we are advancing in existing research areas such as supply chain management, intelligent systems, and spatial analysis. We are also initiating new inquiry in cyber security, next generation transportation, multimedia arts, and other emerging fields.

Our partnership with Methodist/LeBonheur Healthcare has resulted in funds to support health administration and nursing programs and research, as well as the creation of the Center for Healthcare Economics. You can read about the Center's focus on healthcare issues in this publication.

The Kemmons Wilson School of Hospitality and Resort Management provides both programmatic and research opportunities for identifying best practices in the economy and management of the hospitality industry. As the industry is redesigned to meet changing consumer needs, this public/private partnership will be a leading source for research-based information.

By highlighting multiple important research efforts at The University of Memphis, this special issue of Business Perspectives provides a sense of the depth and breadth of the ongoing inquiry taking place on our campus, as well as the current and potential impact of our work.
