In a world crammed with gay photographers passing what is essentially soft porn off as art, the work of Howard Roffman illustrates that depictions of gay life don't have to be cheap and exploitative.
Intimate, poignant and undoubtedly erotic, his photographs celebrate male beauty. With his signature photonarrative, Roffman documents the real-life experiences and relationships of young men caught between the innocence of youth and a more worldly perspective.
His work (left) goes far beyond the usual fare of tanned Adonises and instead captures a world of real characters.
Touching and direct, his images lie somewhere between the beauty of Bruce Weber's work and the intensity of Nan Goldin's, his subjects ranging from fresh-faced adolescents to the porn star Johan Paulik. Howard Roffman, First Decade, is his first UK exhibition and features 42 of his most striking images.
