Health services coordinator awarded fellowship

Maxine Proskurowski, a health services coordinator in the Eugene School District, has been awarded a Robert Wood Johnson Fellowship, a three-year program for nurses in senior executive roles in health services, public health and nursing education.

Recipients maintain their current positions while participating in an individual learning plan that includes advanced leadership curriculum, seminars and workshops. Only 20 fellowships are awarded nationally each year.

Teacher honored for strides in marine education

Pat Williams has received the 2003 Teacher of the Year Award from the National Marine Educators Association.

Williams, a second-grade teacher at Edison Elementary School, was recognized for effective and innovative teaching, for promoting marine education and for continued professional development in marine education for herself and her colleagues.

Prairie Mountain student wins poster contest

An anti-smoking poster by Alena Woods took first place in the state Tar Wars poster contest. Sponsored by the Oregon Academy of Family Physicians, the contest is part of a nationwide educational program designed to discourage fourth- and fifth-grade students from using tobacco products.

Her poster, selected from more than 80 entries, will be entered in the national contest. The fifth-grade student from Prairie Mountain Elementary School in the Bethel School District will travel with one parent to Washington, D.C., to participate in the national conference for poster winners.

Three area students earn $2,500 scholarships

Elizabeth Daniken and Laura Lewis, both of Springfield High School, and Amanda Layton of Oakridge High School have been awarded $2,500 scholarships from the Discover Card Tribute Award Scholarship Program.

Scholarships are awarded to high school juniors who demonstrate excellence in many areas of their lives. Winners must maintain a minimum 2.75 grade point average and must demonstrate accomplishments in three of four areas - special talents, leadership, obstacles overcome and community service.

This year's nine state winners were selected from a pool of more than 8,000 applicants. Winners from each state will compete for nine national scholarships, each worth $25,000.

Cottage Grove junior tops division in spelling

Erika Hoaglund has won first place in Division Three of the Lane County Spelling Contest. The Cottage Grove High School junior will take part in the state contest in September.

Springfield student to attend medical forum

Mia Cadwell of Springfield will attend the National Youth Leadership Forum on Medicine in San Francisco from June 22 to July 1. …
