Research into Poultry Diseases
SYGEN International, a world leader in applying quantitative genetics and biotechnology to animal breeding, announced today that it is to receive funding from the BIRD (Binational Industrial Research and Development) foundation with which to conduct research into disease resistance and mortality in poultry.
Starting this month and lasting for around 18 months, the project is significant in that it illustrates the ease with which Sygen's knowledge base, infrastructure and technology can be applied to different animal species.
The focus of the project will be to identify and sequence genes that increase susceptibility to certain diseases, which in turn increase mortality rates in poultry. The project is a collaboration between Sygen International and Yissum (technology transfer company of The Hebrew University Of Jerusalem) and will have funding of around US$1.0 million, of which BIRD will contribute US$0.5 million.
Sygen will be contributing US$ 0.4 million of existing and new resources to support the project.
The BIRD Foundation is an Israel-U.S. Research and Development fund. Its mission is to stimulate, promote and support industrial research and development of mutual benefit to the U.S. and Israel. In July, the BIRD foundation approved US$9.0 million in support for 10 development projects valued at a total of US$20. …
