European Union Bans Argie Beef

THE European Union is restricting meat imports from Argentina.
An outbreak of Foot-and-Mouth Disease in pigs has been reported by the Argentinean authorities in the Province of Salta, Department of General Jose de San Martin, locality of Tartagal close to the border with Paraguay and Bolivia.
The Argentinean authorities reacted immediately to avoid the possible spread of the disease into other Argentinean territories, in particular with vaccination and a ban of the movement of animals in the affected areas.
The European Commission was informed immediately and the Standing Committee on the Food Chain and Animal Health now voted in favour of an EC proposal to suspend the importation into the EU of de-boned and maturated bovine meat from the Argentinean Departments of Ramon Lista in the province of Formosa and of General Jose de San Martin, Rivadavia, Oran, Iruya and Santa Victoria in the Province of Salta.
"Meat from other regions of Argentina which are free of FMD can continue to be imported into the EU in accordance with existing import rules," a Commission spokesman said. …
