FCUK Gets the Shaft


The mother of a 12-year-old Knox County, Tennessee, middle-schooler has convinced some middle- and high-school librarians to pull the October 2003 issue of Seventeen magazine because of a suggestive full-page perfume ad from fashion company French Connection United Kingdom, which emblazons some of its clothing items with its FCUK acronym.

"Some of the schools have already called me back and said they did find it inappropriate and pulled it," Knox County Schools' Coordinator of Instructional Materials Pat Mashburn acknowledged in the September 25 Knoxville News. The image in question is of a half-dressed man and woman in a pose suggesting they are sexually aroused by each other, with the slogan "Scent to bed" printed across the photo.

"This is a warning for parents: Know what your kids are reading," parent Carla Harris told the News of her reaction to the ad.
