Alaska and Hawaii Would Make Memorable Anniversary Trips
Byline: Madelyn Merwin
Q. My wife and I will be observing our 30th anniversary in 2004 and it seems some type of special vacation would be appropriate.
I was thinking of Hawaii as a possible destination as neither of us has been there and it does have a romantic atmosphere. Your recent story about Hawaii was very informative. Is there a particular time of year that would be best to visit Hawaii, considering the seasonal weather or possible off-season rates?
My wife also has expressed a desire to take an Alaskan cruise at some time, though I've never been quite sure what there is to see or do on such a trip. I'm sure, though, that you could offer many suggestions.
What do you think of the concept of combining an Alaskan cruise and a visit to Hawaii in the same trip? Do you think that would be doable? Is there a single time of year that would be best (or at least good) for both Alaska and Hawaii?
A. First, let's take the Hawaii question. Hawaii is not only romantic, it's beautiful no matter which island you choose to visit. With lovely trade winds and tropical breezes, the year-round temperature in the islands is between 75 and 85 degrees, thus it becomes a desirable winter destination and it's not unreasonably hot in the summer like Arizona or south Florida. Off-season rates are not prevalent in Hawaii, but hotels and resorts do offer package-deal promotions that can be cost-saving. The Alaskan cruise is definitely seasonal. …
