Coors Claims Savings through Managed Care


Adolph Coors Company achieved an "extraordinary turnaround" in its employee mental health costs from 1987 to 1990 as a result of an "aggressive and supportive" managed care program called Special Care Services, according to the Golden, CO, brewer.

The company paid $4.4 million for employee mental health services in 1987, a 46% jump over the previous year, but in 1990 its mental health tab had dropped to $3.6 million, an 18% decrease from three years earlier, and the lowest total in five years, Bob Tank, Jr., Manager of Counseling Services said. And the reduction came at a time of rising costs and escalating employee demand, he said.

Tank said that the Coors approach to managed care features a rare ingredient -- empowering its employee assistance program to approve or deny mental health claims. At the same time, he said pre-certification and concurrent review are required because as a self-insured company, Coors "learned long ago that not every request for treatment is warranted," according to Tank.

The Coors Special Care Services system also includes a team approach to case management, tailor-made treatment, a family focus and a strong emphasis on client involvement, Tank said. Whenever an employee is in need of mental health services, a team is assembled to review the case and craft an individualized and focused treatment plan. …
