Doherty in Slow Lane to Success
Tony Doherty is being earmarked for the top by promoter Frank Warren and his Sports Network organisation - and the big-hitting Pontypool welterweight is happy to make the move.
The emphatic manner in which 20-year-old Doherty dispatched Swansea's Chris Brophy on the recent Ice Rink bill raised a few eyebrows around the game - with the Welshman with the Irish accent underlining his status as one to watch.
Warren, pictured above, was among those impressed and immediately booked Tony for regular action to build his experience, putting him down for action at Edinburgh a fortnight tonight and then in Reading on April 24.
Unfortunately, 'The Doc' will not be travelling to Scotland.
'My left hand is still bruised from the Brophy fight,' says Tony, 'and I've got a bit of a cold. I won't be right and it would be foolish to go through with it unless I was 100 per cent.
'So Reading will be my next one and hopefully I'll be moving up to six rounds. Four rounds is too short for my style of fighting, though I accept you have to have a few of those to begin with while you're learning your trade.
'I'm glad they're going to move me along, though I know I've got to stay in the slow path for the time being. I've got plenty of time - there's no need to rush. …
