Former Village Finance Director Remembered

Schaumburg's recently retired finance director died this week, cutting short what he'd hoped would be years and years of pursuing his passion for fishing and sports.
Keith Wendland, 56, of Wood Dale, began working for Schaumburg in the summer of 1984, following earlier financial jobs for the villages of Franklin Park, Wood Dale and Hoffman Estates.
Wendland was responsible for hiring Schaumburg's current Village Manager, Ken Fritz, as an assistant finance director in the fall of 1984. Fritz subsequently became assistant village manager before reaching his current position.
Wendland added village collector to his previous title of finance director in 1988. He remained with Schaumburg through his retirement in February 2003.
Though Wendland had little family at the time of his death, he acquired many, many friends in his lifetime, Fritz said.
"He was pretty soft-spoken but had a good sense of humor and laughed a lot," Fritz said.
"Keith was a great guy," Schaumburg Mayor Al Larson said. "He was a wonderful man. He loved to fish. He loved to Muskie fish. And he was a great Cub fan. He loved the Cubs."
Wendland's mother died not too long before him, and his father died several years before that. …
