SHE has portrayed herself as an innocent abroad whose only desire is to appear in works of fine cinematic art.

But Margo Stilley, the previously unknown actress who is seen enjoying full, penetrative sex in the explicit new film Nine Songs, appears to have had a more colourful past than she chooses to admit.

Far from being an ingenue, the 21-year-old was a fame-hungry model who was sacked by one of her agencies because of her fondness for late nights, heavy drinking and the stream of men she took home to bed in the early hours.

Last week Stilley shot to fame after director Michael Winterbottom told how she had asked for her name to be removed from the publicity material for Nine Songs, said to be Britain's most sexually explicit mainstream film ever, featuring close-ups of oral sex and ejaculation.

Winterbottom presented his young starlet as a shy and retiring woman. He said he had found Stilley at a casting agency that specialises in extras and that she had not acted before.

'She is a very bright, smart, confident girl,' he said. 'But she's not an actress. She really likes the film but she is going back to university and I think she wants to keep a low profile.' Her highly religious mother, Debbie Collins, also insisted she was a God-fearing girl who had only ever had one serious boyfriend.

And Stilley said in her only interview that she took the part in Nine Songs - unveiled at the Cannes Festival last week - purely because she believed in the integrity of the movie. 'It's beautiful, lovely, sweet, kind, sensitive,' she said.

However, a Mail on Sunday investigation has revealed that this image is far from the one that friends, colleagues and former boyfriends have of the young American who, from an early age, seemed determined to make the big time.

Stilley moved to South Carolina when she was 14 after her parents split, and later went to art school. But she abandoned that in favour of a modelling career in Europe, which she expected would bring her fame and glamour.

She moved to Milan in 2002, posing for pictures that bordered on soft porn - and creating a very different image for herself. Justin Romann, her former booker at Zoom Models in Milan, said the agency had been forced to fire Stilley because of her louche behaviour.

'In Milan she was a real party girl and I heard she was dating a lot of rich Italian men,' he said.

'She also drank too much.

'It got to the point that she was partying so much that she couldn't get up in the morning to go to auditions. …
