FILMS: THE DRAG RUNNERS; Fake Cross-Dressers Chased by Mob
Byline: MARK ADAMS
CONNIE AND CARLA (12A)
THE STARS: Nia Vardalos, Toni Collette, David Duchovny, Stephen Spinella, Dash Mihok.
THE STORY: Connie (Vardalos) and Carla (Collette) are two small-town show tune fans who make a living singing and dancing at a Midwestern airport lounge.
When they witness their boss getting killed they hit the road with a boot full of their wigs and costumes. They end up in Los Angeles - a place so devoid of culture that they presume the killers will never find them there - and manage to create a bizarre cover as musical headliners in a local drag club.
As you would expect everyone thinks they are men in drag, and of course they can never admit the truth.
But when Connie meets Jeff (Duchovny) she finds keeping up the facade harder and harder. Then there is the small fact that the killers have made it to LA and are hot on their trail.
WHAT'S GOOD? Nia Vardalos was the woman behind the romantic comedy hit My Big Fat Greek Wedding, and with Connie And Carla she is again doubling as screenwriter and star. This time round she has scripted a movie that gives her the chance to belt out show tunes AND date David Duchovny... no fool our Nia!
She and Toni Collette (who looks the spitting image of Joan Cusack when she is in drag) are both great as the hapless song 'n' dance duo and actually look and sound the part as drag queens. …
