Cloisters Cuisine Is a Winner


The cafe and restaurant at The Cloister at St Mary's Catholic Cathedral, in Newcastle, re-opened this week, following a re-fit.

Described as a peaceful haven near the busy centre, The Cloister offers commuters, visitors and locals alike a chance to escape the hustle and bustle of the city into the tranquil peace of the Cathedral grounds.

The expanded, licensed operation has been taken over by the Marcantanio family, which owns the Mark Toney ice cream shops.

The Cloister is open each weekday, 7.45am to 5.30pm, for breakfast, morning coffee, lunch and afternoon tea. A sandwich collection and delivery service is available throughout the day. On Saturdays the opening hours are from 7.45am until 5.30pm and on Sundays 9.30am until 1.30pm.

The pounds 1 million redevelopment of the Cathedral in the past year has included the creation of a new bookshop and cafA as well as the refurbishment of the church interior. The Cathedral, designed by A W Pugin, was built in 1844. It is Grade I listed and recognised as one of the most important architectural landmarks of the City.

The redevelopment drew widespread praise and the architect responsible, Kevin Doonan, won the Lord Mayor's Design Award for the improvements. …
