Athletics: Greene Light as Maurice Turns on Power; US TRIALS
MAURICE GREENE lived up to his own hype at the US Olympic trials when he fulfilled his promise to win the men's 100 metres final in Sacramento, California.
Greene (pictured right) had said for months he would win the event and book his place on the US team for Athens.
He did just that on America's west coast, running a blistering 9. 91 seconds to match the California heat and set up a defence of his Olympic title in Athens next month.
``One down, one to go, '' was Greene's immediate reaction as he came off the track, having ran the 47th wind-legal sub-10 second race of his career.
``I have to go and win in Athens now. That's my goal. It's all about the G. O. A. T. '' he added, referring to the acronym tattooed on his arm which stands for Greatest Of All Time.
Greene's time was the second fastest in the world and his fourth in the IAAF top 10 list this year.
