Piggery Pollution Causes 'Fish Kill' in Candaba Swamp

CANDABA, Pampanga Pollution caused by rampant dumping of piggery wastes has started to kill fish in Candaba swamp in this town and destroy some 17,000 hectares of farms, mostly rice lands.
Hundreds of the affected fishermen and farmers have sought the help of Mayor Jerry Pelayo in the effort to save the Candaba swamp and its river tributaries from further contamination and destruction caused by wastes from the big Tipoco piggery farm in nearby San Miguel town, Bulacan.
Representatives of the complaining farmers and fishermen told Pelayo that they have repeatedly brought the problem with the piggery farm during the last two municipal administrations.
They alleged their complaints and petition to close the piggery farm were not acted upon.
The Candaba swamp and its tributaries used to produce tons of fresh fish, and some portion yield huge quantities of water melons during dry seasons. These were then sold in Metro Manila and Central Luzon. …
