It may seem counterintuitive, but Bonnie Hansen, the president of CCS Presentation Systems, took a step backward this year to move ahead.

Hansen gave up her corner office and appointed one of her managers as head of operations.

The move was all part of the self-confessed control freak's go-with-the-flow approach to business. The approach is something that took Hansen time to learn -- 13 years with IBM and the last six with CCS Presentations, which sells and consults on audio-visual equipment.

The shift in jobs duties has allowed Hansen to follow her business philosophy while playing to her strength: working with customers to solve their problems.

"Part of my growing process was giving up control of everything and letting other people do their jobs," she said. "I love my customers, I love working directly with them. I get a lot of my pleasure taking care of my customers."

Hansen likes taking care of business also, and it shows.

Since 1998, CCS Presentations has grown from just Hansen working out of her Atlantic Beach home to three Florida offices and 22 employees.

It all started one year after Nation's Bank acquired Barnett Bank, meaning that as an IBM employee assigned to Barnett Bank, Hansen would have to take an IBM job requiring travel. No way, she said.

"I had already done traveling and didn't want to do that anymore," she said. "I was really ready for a change."

That change meant she stayed home and grew the business, which is part of national network of nine CCS owners (which the company calls "partners") operating in 28 U.S. markets.

Hansen owns CCS under a licensing agreement for the Florida territory as a spin-off from CCS Presentation Systems in Arizona, which started in 1990. …
