Philippine Medical Association's 101st Anniversary
THE Philippine Medical Association (PMA), the umbrella organization of the medical profession of the country, was founded on September 15, 1903, when the country was under American rule. As early as 1927, the Secretary of Interior, under instructions from the GovernorGeneral, consulted with the PMA on the selection of eligible medical professionals for appointment to the Board of Medicine. Since then, the process of consulting with the PMA in filling vacancies in the Medical Board has been made a national policy and has brought about closer collaboration between the PMA and the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC).
The PMAs work has extended beyond Philippine shores as it co-founded regional medical organizations to promote development and improvement of healthcare delivery systems in the region. These are the Confederation of Medical Associations in Asia and Oceania (CMAAO), the Federation of Tropical Medicine (FTM), and the Medical Associations of Southeast Asian Nations (MASEAN). The PMAs extension overseas originates from its membership with the World Medical Association that started in 1949.
The PMA continues to help solve many of the problems of the health care sector in the country, including the accessibility of health services to impoverished groups. …
