It's all too easy to fall into the trap of advertising and promotional campaigns when it comes to beauty.
How many times have you bought a moisturiser just because the radiant-looking model on TV claims that it works, or a miracle-making shampoo that has been hailed by a glossy-locked celebrity? Or even simply because of the stunning packaging?
Sarah Stacey, co-author of The 21st Century Beauty Bible, says today's beauty industry is a jungle.
"There are thousands of products and procedures with endless extravagant claims, scientific gobbledegook, and loads of feel-good `natural' hype. That's why we wrote this book," she says.
"We want to be a woman's best friend and give her unbiased information on what really works, especially with our Tried & Tested surveys, which were carried out on 1,180 women across the country."
These surveys were carried out across 100 brands, in 32 categories, and an average score is taken from them to calculate how well they did overall. New products are highlighted, as well as natural or organic ones.
We've picked out some of the top-scoring essentials.
Every woman wants to find a lippy that will survive meals, drinks, kissing and more, and won't leave your lips dehydrated and cracked.
"There were no natural products that did well enough to be included in this category ( presumably because this stay-put technology is based on synthetic ingredients rather than natural waxes," Sarah says.
The best brands include Max Factor's Lipfinity, pounds 9.99, Shiseido's The Makeup Staying Power Moisturising lipstick, pounds 15 (020 7630-1515), and Clarins's Le Rouge, pounds 13.50 (0800 036-3558).
There were pros and cons with each lipstick, so while they had amazing staying power, few lasted all day, with the gloss disappearing in hours.
Mascara is a highly individual choice. While one woman is happy for mascara to boost her natural lashes, another searches for one that will lengthen or curl for dramatic impact. …
