Space Watch Dish Cut off by Vandals; Jodrell Bank's Giant Telescope Halted

VANDALS have severed communication lines connecting the world famous Jodrell Bank with a powerful giant telescope.
Police were investigating last night after the structure, called the Darnhall telescope, ground to a halt following the spate of incidents.
Telephone lines connecting the observatory, in Goostrey, near Holmes Chapel, Cheshire, with the remote computer driven lens have been cut six times in the last month.
Jodrell Bank spokesman Dr Ian Morison said the cables were cut at Chelford which is eight miles from the observatory.
He added: ``On one occasion, I think they had to lay a completely new length of cable. It certainly affected us with regards to our observations.
Of the telescope, he said: ``When the line's broken it just parks itself. The link has been vandalised several times now.
``It just prevents us from making observations from the telescope. It's not a safety issue, but its operations have definitely been impeded. ''
Two farms in the remote part of Cheshire were also left without phone lines when the equipment was vandalised.
PC Jason Murray said officers believed vandals had planned the attacks because they wanted to harm Jodrell Bank or the other houses. …
