AFP Holds Austere 69th Anniversary Rites

Lt. Gen. Efren Abu, chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP), said yesterday the military establishment will save millions of pesos as it holds very simple rites for tomorrows 69th AFP annivesary celebration in Camp Aguinaldo.
Abu said the AFPs austere rites are in line with President Arroyos directive against lavish celebrations and as the country tries to recover from the spate of storms that wrought havoc in large swaths of L:uzon.
"It will be a very simple one," Abu said. The celebration will be highlighted by the traditional flag raising ceremonies followed by a Mass at the parade grounds.
Apart from the Camp Aguinaldo rites, the AFP will also hold ceremonies at Malacanang, where the President will confer awards to soldiers who showed heroism in defending the government and the people.
According to Abu, they will not have the traditional military parade in review this year.
Top military officials said practice alone for the parade would cost millions for the AFP, which would have to train and provide logistical support to the two brigade-size parade contingents comprised of elements from three service commands-Philippine Army (PA), Philippine Air Force (PAF) and Philippine Navy (PN). …
