'Speed Up Financial Management Packages'
The Leader of Blaenau Gwent Council, Councillor John Hopkins is calling for the Wales Assembly Government to commit to a guaranteed, flexible financial doctrine to be spread over the life of its two major transport projects.
He says, 'Programmed financial security would allow all Local Authorities, like Blaenau Gwent, to provide its communities, regions and ultimately the whole of Wales with a sustainable, integrated transport system.'
The call follows the November Queen's Speech, which outlined the proposed Transport (Wales) Bill. The Bill proposes a fundamental shift in the power of the Welsh Assembly Government to influence and direct policy in all modal patterns of transport.
Blaenau Gwent's Community Plan identifies transport as a key theme. Two major transportation projects are underway. The first, the A465(T) Abergavenny to Hirwaun Dualling, links the south and west of Wales with the Midlands, north of England and beyond, in the Trans European Network. This 40-km trunk road improvement is imperative.
The Line Order for the entire project was made in 1997.
