GMA, Soe Win Meet Today on Trade, Cooperation

President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo and visiting Myanmar Prime Minister Lt. Gen. Soe Win are meeting today to discuss bilateral and multilateral issues ranging from the two countries cooperation in the areas of trade and investments to the promotion of human rights.
The President is scheduled to welcome the Myanmar Prime Minister and members of his official delegation at Malacanang Palace at about 10:15 a.m. after the customary wreath-laying ceremony at the Rizal Park in Manila.
The two leaders first met in November 2004 in the sidelines of the 10th Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) summit in Vientiane, Laos where they committed to advance the two countries diplomatic relations that started way back in 1956.
After the traditional arrival honors accorded a visiting head of state, President Arroyo and the visiting Myanmar Prime Minister will hold a meeting to discuss bilateral and multilateral issues and concerns affecting the two countries.
On top of the agenda of their bilateral meeting is the furtherance of the harmonious relations between the two countries, taking into account possible cooperation on trade and investments.
Mrs. Arroyo is expected to make a strong pitch for the countrys jewel industry in which possible agreements could be forged for the sourcing of semi-precious stones from Myanmar which produces 36 types of precious gems such as ruby, sapphire and jade. …
