Bowker, J. Whitaker & Sons Announce Worldwide English-Language Books in Print CD-ROM
The first worldwide CD-ROM publications, based on the resources of two bibliographic publishers, have been announced by R.R. Bowker and J. Whitaker & Sons, Ltd. Both companies are producers of CD-ROM references in their respective marketplaces, providing librarians and booksellers with essential bibliographic tools.
An agreement in principle has been reached between Bowker and Whitaker to create a combined database of over two million bindings on a single CD-ROM disc, updated monthly. The disc will contain all entries from Bowker's Books In Print Plus, its best selling subscription CD-ROM product, and Whitaker's Bookbank, one of the U.K.'s best-selling bookstore CD-ROM tools.
Books In Print Plus, first introduced in 1986, contains all titles currently available in the United States. Bookbank, introduced in 1987, includes English-language titles from the United Kingdom, as well as other English-speaking countries.
Because each company has its own CD-ROM software user interface, the new product will be available through each format, leaving customers to choose their preferred interface. Both versions will be available in early 1993. …
