Mayoral Hopefuls Square off at Forum Grayslake Candidates Give Differing Views of Community Cooperation

Mending relationships among various units of government was among issues addressed Thursday, as three men wanting to be the next leader of the village of Grayslake pitched their ideas of how to improve the community during a candidate forum.
For the first time, the University of Illinois Extension of Lake County sponsored a forum at the extension building on Route 45 in Grayslake. The forum featured incumbent Mayor Tim Perry, as well as challengers Carl Deal and Jeff Werfel. Deal is president of the Grayslake Park District, while Werfel is a village trustee.
"We are a fragmented community," said Deal, a management consultant and 13-year resident of the village. Deal contends village residents are divided over tax increases, control of a village pool and development of two high schools, as well as the mayoral election.
He contends the village has an opportunity for a fresh start in relationships by electing a new mayor April 5 who can work with new superintendents who start work July 1 in Grayslake Area Elementary District 46 and Grayslake Community High School District 127.
Perry, meanwhile, says the job of mayor is about "experience and results. …
