THE NEW TOP STAFFER WHO TAKES over at ABA beginning this month is a not-so-new ABA veteran of 20 years. With the retirement of Don Ogilvie, Ed Yingling is our new president and CEO.

While Ed and Don worked closely with one another for the past two decades both brought different strengths to the CEO job. We used to joke that Don and Ed worked so closely together that they could finish each other's sentences. But it was their differences that really worked to strengthen the team's successes.

Ed brings to the CEO job a fresh attitude, hands-on management style, and a think-it-through-carefully approach to issues and problems. He has an ability to think both globally and at a level of detail that is unusual for a CEO. He prefers to analyze problems and explore all the options before acting. Ed knows our industry, works well with people--his staff give him high marks as a manager--listens to bankers, and is passionate about ABA membership as a value banks cannot do without. He understands the ABA culture.

Our national association is getting a seamless leadership transition, continued quality representation, and an undiminished focus on the association's mission and the things that matter most to us as bankers.

We're getting a really good deal.

Ed is an attorney, a lobbyist, a husband, and a dad. He's been successfully representing bankers, initially as a member of a Washington, D.C., law firm, for more than three decades. During his 20-year tenure as head of ABA's government relations, the association has been recognized as one of an elite group of power brokers in the Nation's Capital, one of Fortune magazine's "Power 25." ABA was the only financial services trade association to be so honored in every Fortune magazine poll. …
