I WASN'T surprised when London's name came out of the IOC envelope on Wednesday to hear that the news reduced some people to tears.
I too came close to crying, as I remembered one of the funniest pieces of telly I've ever seen. The Spitting Image sketch after Birmingham failed to land the 1992 Olympic Games.
In case you missed it, as Barcelona was announced the winner, and swarthy puppets performed somersaults in the background, a latex Denis Howell turned to a latex Mary Whitehouse and said: "Do you think we should have told them about the glass museum at Dudley?"
A priceless image which sums up how embarrassing the two British bids were in the 1990s.
