Gov't Offices Set the Example in Energy Conservation

All government departments and agencies have started implementing stringent energy conservation measures in line with the instruction of President Arroyo to bring down overall consumption of energy and exploit alternative sources of fuel.
Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye said Malacanang is setting the example not only in energy conservation but also in fiscal discipline. He said lights are being dimmed and air-conditioning turned off early in the Palace.
"Strict energy conservation is now a matter of national survival and we will be the first to bite the bullet," Bunye said.
Malacanangs action was prompted by the surging cost of crude oil in the world market. The latest reports from the Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC) showed that the cost of crude oil per barrel has passed the $66 mark.. Venezuela President Hugo Chavez was quoted as saying that he expects global oil prices to continue rising. Venezuela is the worlds No. 5 oil exporter and a member of OPEC.
President Arroyo called on the people to appreciate the looming crisis from the unabated price of oil in the world market.
"Let us face this challenge squarely and close ranks," President Arroyo said. "This is not a simple test of our resiliency as a people but a real challenge to our economic survival. …
