It's Results Day Joy for Pupils

High achievers around the region were last night celebrating record A-level results.

Among the top students was Prudhoe High School pupil Alice Rowlands, who picked up five A grades in her A-levels and a B in an AS-level.

The 18-year-old from Riding Dene in Mickley, Northumberland, is going to Imperial College in London to study physics and theoretical physics after top marks in physics, maths, chemistry, art and general studies.

She also achieved a grade B in ceramics at AS-level.

She said: "I was so nervous driving up to school and was shaking like a leaf. I needed three As to get a place at the university I wanted, so I would have been really disappointed if I hadn't got that.

"I don't think A-levels are easier, but I do think there is less pressure on students because they are now modular.

"Not all the emphasis is on an exam at the end and if you have done badly in the first year, then you know how much you have to do to pick it up the next year."

Other high achievers included Newcastle Royal Grammar School pupil Aravind Ramesh, from Gosforth, who is taking up a place to read medicine at Cambridge University.

As well as scooping four A grades, Aravind was named among the top five marks in the country for biology and chemistry ( repeating the feat he managed at GCSE two years ago in French, German and Spanish. …
