Former President Corazon Aquino yesterday urged Filipinos to continue to lobby for truth, authenticity, and better governance by praying together and seeking Divine Guidance. Mrs. Aquino aired the call in a rosary prayer and forum at the St. Theresa's College in Quezon City.
Mrs. Aquino said her participation in a march to the Batasang Pambansa last month to show support for the pro-impeachment congressmen was an act expected of every Filipino.
"I am PCCA, Private Citizen Corazon Aquino, Filipino. I do not claim to represent anyone's views other than my own. Whether in the company of 10 or 10,000, I will be there if I believe I should let my stand be heard. I have no control over that. Such is the nature of democracy," the former chief executive said.
Her plea to President Arroyo to make the "supreme sacrifice" of resigning from office, she said, was natural in a democracy which demands that each one makes a stand on national and local issues.
Quoting from an article in the Time magazine entitled "The Making of the Hero" by Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono, Mrs. Aquino said, "Every society needs heroes, and every society has them. The reason we don't see them is because we don't bother to look."
"Let us bother to look for heroes and to be like them. Let us ask ourselves what we are willing to do for others or for our chosen cause," she said.
Asked by a Grade 5 pupil on what the youth could do to help the government, she said the students should join the nation in prayer and tell their parents to do sacrifices for the people.
"What we face today as a nation is not so much a political or economic crisis but a moral one. Gatherings like this give us the good opportunity to come together in prayer, introspection and discernment. No one among us can claim to have all the answers. With divine guidance, I feel confident that we will find the right path forward," she said.
Also yesterday, opposition leaders questioned the drafting of an executive order that aims to clothe President Arroyo with emergency powers, saying the move was dangerous and could eventually lead towards martial law. …
