Workers' Vote of No Confidence in Council's Job Evaluation Exercise

Many of us believe we work harder than our boss, and deserve an extravagant pay rise. Better still, you probably should be paid more than your manager - if the findings of a recent job evaluation survey are anything to go by.

Council bosses on Anglesey, in North Wales, called in consultants to help assess the work of all employees and ensure their salaries were appropriate given their responsibilities.

Under the system staff members were given scores based on their duties. According to the system the higher the points total they amassed the greater the salary they ought to attract.

But council chiefs have now been forced to call in a new group of consultants after the survey delivered an entirely unexpected set of results.

A green keeper on a council golf course was given a higher score than the county's solicitors. Manual and administration workers amassed more points than their managers - meaning they ought to get bigger salaries.

Now a petition expressing no confidence in the job evaluation exercise is said to have attracted the signatures of almost all the 2,000 staff affected.

The authority's managing director Geraint Edwards has sent an email to the workforce saying the evaluation scheme is to be reviewed by consultants because 'there are a number of apparent and some obvious anomalies in the provisional scores'. …
