Fantastic fungus presentation
Author, photographer and adventurer Taylor Lockwood will give his presentation of "Fantastic Fungi of the World" at Lane Community College on Sunday. The show includes music, images and stories from his recent travels in Africa, Australia and Southeast Asia. The cultural and medicinal aspects of mushrooms and mushrooming will be the focus of his presentation. The show begins at 7 p.m. in Forum 307 on the Lane Community College main campus. A donation of $3-$5 is suggested.
Colossal coho on Umpqua
The Umpqua River yielded one of the country's largest salmon, an 18-pound coho. The fish was caught by Phil Swaggert, who will be featured in the December issue of "Outdoor Life." Every year, the magazine presents fishing awards in various categories. Swaggert, along with other winners, received a special certificate, a pewter pin and an embroidered patch. Details on next year's contest are also included in the December issue, as well as a blank official entry form.
Fern Ridge back in business
The rainy season has transformed fields at Fern Ridge Wildlife Area into wet havens for migrating waterfowl. After months of repair work at Fern Ridge Dam that kept water levels low, hunters and wildlife enthusiasts have patiently awaited the return of wildlife to the area.
