Portland film festival
fires up projectors today
Movie geeks should think about heading north for the next couple of weeks as the 29th annual Portland International Film Festival gets under way today.
Between now and Feb. 25, 134 films from three dozen countries will be screened. Among the movies are a handful of Oscar nominees, including "Totsi," "Joyeux Noel (Merry Christmas)' and "Sophie Scholl: The Final Days."
Also on the list are the Australian anti-Western "The Proposition," starring Guy Pearce and Emily Watson; Werner Herzog's "sci-fi IMAX" film "The Wild Blue Yonder"; "Wah Wah," from actor-turned director Richard E. Grant and featuring Miranda Richardson, Gabriel Byrne and Watson; and Jeff Feuerzeig's documentary "The Devil and Daniel Johnston," about the troubled yet talented American musician Daniel Johnston.
An Oregon-born film, "Clear Cut: The Story of Philomath, Oregon," will play after already screening at the Sundance Film Festival. …
