Nurses Earning Dollars
(Editor's note: Pinay nurses in the US earn about 12.5 times more than their friends/kin in RP as noted by the author.)
IN RP, nurses get a pay of less than R15,000 monthly and those employed in provincial hospitals don't even receive enough for their monthly subsistence.
Health budget in provinces
In the early 1990s, bright officials in Manila experimented with transferring to local governments the health budget for a reason that moved doctors, nurses, attendants, etc. to reserve their best cuss words for all officials responsible for entrusting them to local governments. The national budget was not given to the local governments to pay them.
Delayed monthly pay
Most provinces in RP -- 79 in all -- are poor and cannot pay on time health personnel in provincial and municipal hospitals. In some poor provinces, health personnel receive their pay five to 10 days late giving 5/6 bankers a reason to rejoice. (They charge an interest rate of 20 percent monthly or 240 percent yearly. It's not rare to hear of borrowers paying interest for many years without touching the principal.)
Schwarzenegger and Pinay
A major daily (not the MB) this week showed a picture of California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger hugging a Filipina after being sworn as a US citizen. The governor himself is an immigrant from Austria who showed his incredible build and muscle to Hollywood after being voted the youngest Mr. Universe a number of times.
$2,500 to $3,500 plus monthly
The Filipina nurse in the US gets $2,500 plus per month without including overtime of about $1,000 plus. As of May 24 the conversion rate was R52.85 to $1. Our nurse in the US gets the equivalent of R184,975 monthly or R2,219,700 yearly.
It's clearly against the Bill of Rights to force them to stay in RP and receive R15,000 or less monthly until retirement at age 65 without savings. The laws of economics cannot be amended by Congress or presidential order.
Savings of $1,000 monthly
Most Pinay nurses in the US can save at least $1,000 per month or $12,000 a year. In 10 years, they can take a long vacation in RP with savings of $120,000 or R6,342,000 or more. If the peso falls to R55 the $120,000 savings becomes R6,600,000.
Basic pay of $6,000 to $7,000 monthly at retirement
If the Pinay nurse in New York or Chicago retires after 35 to 40 years, her basic pay would be around $6,000 to $7,000 monthly at retirement while her friend in Manila expects to retire with a pay of less than R20,000 monthly. …
