THRIVE THROUGH CORPORATE SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY: Children Are Learning to Give Rugby a Try
Children from inner-city Birmingham are being converted into fans of rugby thanks to a new project.
Pupils at eight primary schools in the Handsworth area are learning all about the sport through a series of tag-rugby matches and coaching sessions.
Schools have been given rugby equipment and teachers have been sent on coaching courses as part of the initiative which is supported by the Commission for Racial Equality, Pertemps Employment Alliance, Sutton Coldfield Rugby Club and West Midlands Police.
Pc Dan Jones won funding for the scheme and encouraged local schools to join the tag-rugby league. He said: "Sport is a great way for young children to have fun, stay fit and meet other youngsters.
"We also want it to improve relations between the schools and give pupils a chance to meet each other. This should mean they find it easier to settle when they move on to senior schools because they'll be with other children they know.
"The schools all now have qualified coaches and all the equipment they need such as balls, tags and bibs. …
