OBITUARY; Funeral for Popular Businessman
ONE of Northern Ireland's most popular and successful businessmen will be buried in Co Down today.
Martin Phillips, the owner of the well-known carpet business, passed away on Sunday after losing his battle against cancer. He was 48.
The father of four, from Newtownards, operated the business for the past 25 years after initially working for his father-in-law.
Funeral director Norman McBriar, a close friend of the Phillips family for many years, said Mr Phillips would be sadly missed.
He had been due to celebrate his 49th birthday next Sunday.
"Martin built up the business year after year but despite his success he never changed as a man, he was always the same Martin Phillips,' said Mr McBriar.
"He worked night and day to make the business a success but he always had time for his family and friends.
"He would never have walked past you in the street, he was a successful and busy man but he always had time for people. He wasn't pompous, he was a down-to-earth, nice fella. …
