Carswell to Operate Legal Databases within QUICKLAW Online Information Service

Carswell, a division of Thomson Canada Limited, and QL Systems Limited have jointly announced an agreement for operation of the databases of 17 Carswell law reports within QL's QUICKLAW online information service. The databases will provide the full-text and editorial summaries of Canadian judicial decisions from a wide variety of topical law reports and collections of decisions of the courts of British Columbia and Alberta.

"Operation of the Carswell publications as databases within QUICKLAW fills an important gap in the texts of judicial decisions available online to the Canadian legal community," Adrienne Herron, a QL vice-president, said. She added that Carswell is particularly strong in the publication of topical law reports. The British Columbia Law Reports and the Alberta Law Reports also are heavily used legal publications.

The new Carswell databases will be in addition to other databases already operated by Carswell within QUICKLAW--the Western Weekly Reports and the Index to Canadian Legal Literature.

Using new computer software, the QUICKLAW service will provide hypoertext links among the Carswell databases and other databases operated within QUICKLAW. These will reduce links between the Carswell databases and the new CanCite research system announced recently by QL and McGraw-Hill Ryerson Ltd. Mrs. Herron praised the coopertion among the competing legal publishers in providing hypertext links among their databases. "This places most of Canada's major case law publications within a single computer service," she pointed out.

Carswell's database family will include the following publications:

Administrative Law Reports Business Law Reports Canadian Cases on Employment Law Canadian Environmental Law Reports Canadian Intellectual Property Reports

Canadian Occupational Health & Safety CAses

Construction Law Reports

Criminal Reports

Estate & Trust Reports

Immigration Law Reports

Motor Vehicle Reports

Municipal & Planning Law Reports

Real Property Reports

Reports of Family Law

Alberty Law Reports

British Columbia Law Reports

Northwest Territories Reports
