Mosquito Puts the Bite on Yob Gangs; Alarm Halves Menace of Anti-Social Groups

YOB behaviour has been halved in part of Merseyside thanks to a high-pitched alarm only people aged under 25 can hear.
The pioneering Mosquito device emits a ultrasonic signal which drives crowds away within minutes of hearing the shrill sound.
Since being secretly installed, reports of trouble in the Chain Lane area of St Helens have been cut by 60% over a two-month period.
Large mobs of teenagers were making life a misery for residents by congregating around the shopping centre and in Blackbrook Road. It was one of the first areas in the country to get the device, which is also on trial in Speke.
The noise, which is inaudible to older people, becomes more uncomfortable the longer youngsters stay within its range, but does not cause them harm.
Trouble spots in Leicestershire, Yorkshire and Wales have also seen the pounds 600 units installed to crack down on yob behaviour.
The alarm will continue to be used in Chain Lane and has been earmarked for other hotspot locations in Mersey-side. …
