Setting the TONE; WHAT'S HAPPENING ON THE COUNTRY & IRISH MUSIC SCENE Irish Folk Legends Are Still Leaving Imprint on Today's Music Scene
THE amazing WolfeTones are the longest lasting of all the folk acts to come out of the ballad explosion of the sixties.
There were hundreds or maybe thousands of ballad groups and performers around at that time now there's only a handful left and the Tones are still top of the heap.
They have been consistently poplar with young and old over the years and succeeded in winning every generation of young people to their music.
The Tones were ever popular because all enjoyed hearing the songs and stories of their land in a way that no one else could sing or tell them. You might say they had their finger on the pulse of Ireland.
They had their humble beginnings back in 1963 when Brian Warfield and Noel Nagle sailed to England as emigrants. They were soon performing at all the folk clubs around London and it was not long before they became one of the top names on that circuit.
It was in London they first adopted the name WolfeTones as a name for their group. They returned to Ireland and soon were in demand for radio and television work.
They became a favorite on the RTE networks and when ever they performed they succeeded to increasing the ratings. They were joined by Tommy Byrne in '64 and have been together ever since. It was in that same year they were spotted by Fontana records and signed for a series of Albums.
They have had a wonderfully successful recording career since then and over the years have always featured among the best selling lists and pop charts throughout every decade of there existence.
They have had several No.1 singles when single record hits were genuine and reflected sales. They hold the record of having the fastest and biggest selling No.1 of all time.
Their entire Album releases have succeeded in reaching the double or triple platinum status, while their song A Nation Once Again was voted number one in a poll held by the BBC to select the best and most popular song in the world over the century.
Musical fads and fashions came and went over the years but the Tones have always remained timeless, never stale or outdated. …
