22nd Judicial Circuit
Independent Scott Summers is challenging Republican Charles Weech for the position of circuit judge, 22nd Judicial Circuit, Additional Judgeship A, 1st Subcircuit. Here are some questions the candidates responded to:
Q. Why are you running for this office, whether for re-election or election the first time? Is there a particular issue that motivates you, and if so, what? What will be your main priority?
Summers: I would like to see a change in state law that would make all judicial elections in Illinois nonpartisan. That's one goal of my campaign to run for judge as independent - to show (in my own small way) that it can be done. I believe that we should insulate our judiciary from the need to raise campaign money altogether. We will do well to begin with a public campaign financing mechanism for our state supreme court. In time, we should extend public financing (and spending caps) to our appellate and circuit court races.
Weech: I am seeking the position as it is an important time for the court system in McHenry County. The state has recognized that McHenry County deserves our own, independent judicial circuit, and we will become the 22nd Judicial Circuit later this year. With that independence, comes the problems of managing our growth, recognizing our diversity, and administering justice fairly and firmly. I believe that my diverse background and experience will allow me to meet these challenges to the benefit of the citizens of McHenry County and the subcircuit. …
