'Troika,' Approved without Cuts

Yes, this much talked-about sexy movie, "Troika," which is the maiden offering of Daven Productions International, has been approved without cuts by the Movie and Television Review and Classification Board (MTRCB). This is according to the director, Ihman Esturco.

Daven Productions is a new film production outfit managed by the makers of the award-winning film "Masahista (The Masseur)." As has been reported, "Masahista" has been screened in various international film festival. Behind this new and aggressive film company are Coco Simmo and Ihman Esturco, who by the way, is making his directorial debut via "Troika." According to him, "Troika" is a Russian word for threesome, and yes, the lead characters of the movie (Mara Altiera, Andre Soriano and Jamil Basa) will be doing "threesome" love scenes. And they will be in their naked glory! And for this, the director said they expect to be under fire (by the moralists).

"But we don't mind," he said because the more they get under fire, the more they are challenged, because he believes that in this day and time, sex and other bold topics should already be tackled in the open. Ihman also believes that with the rising number of sex crimes in the country nowadays, bringing this kind of film in the open would somehow help. And besides, he stressed, "Troika" was done in an artful and moving way that even the people at MTRCB didn't find it necessary to cut any scenes in its trailer.

Coco Simmo, who line-produced "Troika," described the movie as an erotic drama that dwells on the dilemma of an Indian wife (Mara Altiera) married to a Filipino mining engineer (Andre Soriano) whose marriage is on the verge of breaking up. Mara, the wife, will do anything to please the husband even to the point of indulging in a threesome with a native man (Jamil Basa) whom her husband is attracted to.

Before the shooting started, the three lead stars went through an "extensive sensual workshop," where they were kissing and hugging in the raw. However, they never felt they were exploited in any way especially in the sensitive scenes because the whole production staff was serious with their work and they were professional enough which inspired them to really perform at their best. Ihman said he found his new actors through a series of auditions.

The movie will have its premiere showing on Jan. 30 at the Robinson Galleria Cinema 2. It will also have its advance screenings in various cities around the country. This early, no less than 14 international film festivals have requested for copies of "Troika" for review. The producers are considering favorably the invitations and this is why Coco and Ihman had to fly to Hong Kong to produce more copies.

"Troika," written by Enrique Ramos (he scripted the Palanca awardee "Azucena" which was produced into a movie by Regal Entertainment), has in its support cast established actors like Criselda Volks, Raven Villanueva, Lara Morena, Lauren Novero, Carlo Locana and Jennifer Bacani of Viva Hot Babes.

"Troika" will have its regular theatrical run starting on Feb. 14.
