5 Fencers Named for Elite Training

THE PHILIPPINE Fencing Federation has nominated five athletes to be included in the Olympic training program this year aimed to strengthen the country's campaign in the 2007 Southeast Asian Games and the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
PFF President Celso Dayrit named the athletes as SEA Games champions Walbert Mendoza, Gian Carlo Nocom, Emerson Segui, Ramil Endriano and Venna Nuestro.
The five fencers participated in the Doha Asian Games last year. In 2005, the group won five gold medals in the Manila SEA Games. The SEAG feat also earned the team its seventh overall crown in the sport since the 1993 Singapore meet.
Mendoza and Nocom are saber bets while Segui and Endriano are campaigning in the foil category. Nuestro competes in the women's foil.
The five, however, will still be evaluated based on their exploits in different international exposures calendared until the Beijing Olympiad.
"We have a lot of activities, programs and exposures abroad for our fencers," said the former Philippine Sports Commissioner and Philippine Olympic Committee president. …
