T-YOU; Rants & Raves Police Need to Realize Elderly Can Sometimes Be Paranoid
I'm calling about the recent shootings by the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office. Elderly people have to be considered for possible early stages of dementia, as well as coping with diminished hearing and eyesight. Part of that dementia is a paranoid, delusional behavior. Therefore, a knock at the door, someone in the front yard and certainly police in front of their house, can, in their mind, become someone breaking in -- posing a threat to which they feel they must defend themselves. Perhaps the police need to be aware that dealing with a 20-something is much different than dealing with an 80-something. And adult family members need to recognize the diminished capacity of their elderly family members and make sure they get proper care.
WHY DIDN'T HE CALL POLICE?
It is indeed sad that an 80-year-old man was shot and killed while trying to chase off, with a gun, what he thought to be drug dealers. However, why did he not call the police and report this to begin with? Is it OK for someone to arm themselves and go out into the streets to enforce the law if they are 80? What if everyone did that? Maybe then the police could just all stay at the station, as some black leaders are suggesting. Is the point of all this not obvious?
WHY DIDN'T POLICE BACK OFF?
I simply don't understand why five trained police officers cannot overcome one 80-year-old man without killing him on his own property. Why couldn't they simply back off and abort the sting operation? Why couldn't they just call uniformed officers to handle the situation? Is their only recourse to kill? I think Sheriff John Rutherford needs to get personally involved in the training of his officers.
WHY NOT WORK TOGETHER?
It's odd how we try to figure out causes for a racial divide in this city when we have groups like the New Black Panther Party encouraging citizens to fight police in the streets. Does this mean when a white person is killed by police, we should call the KKK? ... Where was the Black Panther group when all the black-on-black crime was going on? Our police are obviously concentrating on these high-crime areas. Stand up for yourself and work with them, not against them.
NEW USE FOR POLICE FORCE
I have an idea on how to bring the soldiers home and end the Iraq war: Send over the Jacksonville Sheriff's Office.
COPS JUST CAN'T WIN
The black community wants the Sheriff's Office to abolish crime and drugs in the neighborhoods, but when the police officers respond to these requests, the New Black Panther Party and other black leaders go whining to Corrine Brown. It just seems that it's darned if you do and darned if you don't.
A SIMPLE THANK-YOU
I would like to say thank you to Sheriff Rutherford for keeping the streets as safe as possible.
HOORAY FOR HEALTH LINK
Last week, after days of a medical condition, I called Health Link at St. Vincent's. The R.N. took me through a detailed check list. When we were about half-done, she told me I needed to call 911; that I had lost too much blood and needed to get to the emergency room now. Thank goodness for this service. It may have saved my life or prevented me from having permanent damage.
TURNING THE TABLES
I deny that atheists actually exist. Unless someone produces real evidence, I am going to push for laws banning any mention of atheism in public places. …
